Yosemite Lions Club Team Formed for the Mariposa Relay For Life Benefitting the American Cancer Society

Yosemite Lions Club members have formed a team for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, a fundraising event that "gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease."  At the Relay, teams camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and walk or run around a track or designated path. Each team has a representative on the track at all times during the event which can last up to 24 hours.  The club's team, Yosemite Hiking For a Cure, will be led by club member and team captain Patti Burgess.  The 2011 Relay for Life of Mariposa, CA on Saturday, May 21 will be held at the Mariposa fairgrounds beginning at 9:00 AM.  Besides Yosemite Hiking for a Cure, 21 additional teams have registered for the Relay with a total of 184 participants to date.  If you would like to join the Yosemite Lions Club team to participate in this year's Relay, you can register online at the event website.  If you can't participate, but would like to contribute to this fundraising event, you can also use the event website to donate funds.

Yosemite Lions Club Welcomes New Member Teri Tudela!

New Lions Club member Teri Tudela and club President Kym Wright-Youngdale

Just to start 2011 off right, the Yosemite Lions Club has grown and we are pleased to welcome Teri Tudela as our newest club member. This is the second year in a row that the club has expanded it's membership since Michelle Hansen joined in 2010. The club received a letter from Lions Club International recognizing the Yosemite Lions for meeting membership recruiting goals for 2009-2010 in the Year-Round Growth Program. A patch to place on the club banner celebrating the achievement was included with the letter. With Teri Tudela's membership in 2011, we have once again met our membership recruitment goals and the Yosemite Lions Club now has 16 members to contribute their time and effort to the Yosemite community.

Teri lives and works in Yosemite Valley as a Retail Buyer for DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite. Teri joined her husband, Weimar Tudela (who also works for the DNC Retail Department), at Yosemite in May 2010. Teri has previously volunteered at Lions Club events in Yosemite and we look forward to working with her as a full-fledged member.

Spreading Holiday Cheer and Raising Funds in Yosemite Valley

Though we didn't sell them all, the Yosemite Lions Club offered trees, wreaths and flower bulbs for sale in Yosemite Valley on December 3rd to raise funds for community projects.  Hosted annually on the same day as the Yosemite Village Store Holiday Party, the Lions Club operates a sales table outside of the store to tempt shoppers and party-goers with holiday decor.  This year, in addition to live potted mini trees and fresh greenery wreaths, flower bulb kits of Amaryllis and Paperwhites and live potted 4 foot trees were also available.

Lions Club members were on hand selling trees and wreaths from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in front of the store and all items were made available during the store party throughout the evening.  Lions Club Secretary Brett Archer even offered to deliver items to community members in Curry Village, in true holiday spirit.

Thanks to members Kym, Brett, Michelle, Yolanda, Jodi and Mike for staffing the sales table with special thanks to Lions Club volunteer Shani as the sub for her husband Sean!  Thanks to the Yosemite community members (and visitors!) who support Lions Club fundraisers in Yosemite National Park.
